VPS snapshots and daily backups compared
In this article (6)
Your VPS has two backup types: manually created snapshots and the optional daily backup service available at checkout.
Snapshot
A copy of your server disk at a particular moment. Each server includes 2 free snapshots. We recommend taking one before a major update or configuration change.
Taking a snapshot
- Open My Servers and select your server.
- Snapshots: select Take Snapshot.
- The backup appears in the list within a few minutes.
When you reach the limit, remove an old snapshot using Delete before taking another.
Restoring a snapshot
- Find the snapshot in the list and select Restore.
- Read and accept the warning.
Warning: Your server disk is replaced by the selected snapshot; all data created after that snapshot is deleted and this cannot be undone. The server may be offline for a few minutes during restoration.
What you should know
- Snapshots belong to the server; deleting the server, for example on service termination, also deletes its snapshots.
- When service is suspended, you can view snapshots, but server actions are disabled.
Daily backups (optional add-on)
If added at checkout, a full disk backup is taken automatically every day and the last 7 days are retained. Pricing depends on your plan and appears at checkout. For assistance with these backups, open a support ticket.
Which should you use?
| Snapshot | Daily backups | |
|---|---|---|
| Who creates it? | You, from the dashboard | Automatically, every day |
| Number retained | Up to 2 | Last 7 days |
| Cost | Free | Add-on service |
| Suitable use | Protection before changes | Regular, continuous protection |
